Question:
What Does "Being Born of Water" Mean?
Someone asked this question recently referring to what Jesus told Niccodemus in John 3:5 and this is my response.
Answer:
The phrase, "Born of water" refers to the effects of the Word of God upon someone who is being born again.
There are always two factors present whenever someone is born again:
(1) The Spirit of God
(2) The Word of God.
One cannot work without the other.
So, when Jesus mentioned being "born of water and of the Spirit" He was referring to the effects of the Word of God and the Spirit of God upon a person during the Born Again experience.
Scriptural support for this interpretation will be found in two passages of scripture:
(1) Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
Here you clearly see the presence of the water and the Spirit in the born again process.
But this washing cannot be referring to natural water because natural water cannot affect your spirit, where regeneration takes place.
This washing must be done with something spiritual and not natural.
The next scripture verse explains exactly what that spiritual thing is.
(2) Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.
Here we plainly see that God likens the spiritual effects of the word of God (sanctifying and cleansing) like the natural effects of water (washing and cleansing).
This is why Jesus said, "you must be born of water" He was referring to the word of God in the born again process!
